چکیده

LR 115 is a solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) based on cellulose nitrate and has been commonly used for measurements of concentrations of radon gas and/or radon progeny. These measurements depend critically on the removed thickness of the active layer during etching. However, the thickness of removed layer calculated using the etching period does not necessarily provide a su6ciently accurate measure of the thickness. For example, the bulk etch rate depends on the strength of stirring during etching. We propose here to measure the thickness of the active layer by using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, with the wave number at 1598 cm−1 corresponding to the O–NO2 bond. We have found an exponential decay relationship between the infrared transmittance at the wave number at 1598 cm−1 and the thickness of the active layer for LR 115 detector. This provides a fast and non-destructive method to measure the thickness of removed layer from etching of LR 115 detector. c © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fast and non-destructive determination of active-layer thickness of LR 115 SSNTD using a color commercial document scanner

Measurements using the LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) depend critically on the removed thickness of the active layer during etching, which cannot be controlled by the etching period alone. For example, the bulk etch rate depends significantly on the strength of stirring during etching. We propose here a fast, inexpensive and nondestructive method based on a color commercial d...

Derivation of V function for LR 115 SSNTD from its partial sensitivity to 222Rn and its short-lived progeny.

Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) have been widely applied for measurements of environmental concentrations of 222Rn and its progeny. The V function for an SSNTD is important for understanding the track development in the SSNTD as well as for real life applications. The partial sensitivity rhoi of the LR 115 detector applied in the bare mode to 222Rn and its short-lived progeny is re...

Bulk etch characteristics of colorless LR 115 SSNTD

The colorless LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) (from DOSIRAD) is based on cellulose nitrate and was first studied in view of its applicability in radiobiological experiments with alpha particles. In this paper, the bulk etch characteristics were studied. We first showed that the shape of the alpha-particle tracks are irregular with blurred contours under the optical microscope....

Sensitivity of LR 115 SSNTD in a diffusion chamber

Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs), such as LR 115, have been commonly used in diffusion chambers for long-term measurements of radon gas concentrations. For the LR 115 SSNTD, it has been found that the active layer removed during chemical etching is significantly affected by the presence and amount of stirring, and thus cannot be controlled easily. However, the sensitivity of the LR ...

X-ray irradiation induced degradation of cellulose nitrate

Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry was previously proposed to measure the thickness of the cellulose nitrate layer of he commonly used LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). The present work is devoted to the investigation whether the X-ray radiation nvolved in EDXRF spectrometry will induce degradation of the cellulose nitrate. For this purpose, Fourier trans...
